PICO INTERNATIONAL: OPODNE 2016 HIGHLIGHTS – MONT ORGANISE

Two hundred years ago, Haitians birthed the spirit of self-determination and self-reliance with the only successful slave revolt in the hemisphere. The country has been under assault ever since. The leaders of OPODNE are committed to destroy a culture of corruption and dependency and re-birth Haiti’s promise. When dedicated leaders persevere, they make a huge difference for the common good.
Mont Organise is the newest community organized by OPODNE. This year, 35 leaders started a pepper cooperative to improve economic conditions. They provided their own land and labor and raised $75 to buy seeds. By fall, they harvested their first crop and sold it for $750. Roslyn, Chair of the group, says “This project improves people’s economic security. They have some money in their pockets when they sell the peppers. Our goal for next year is to expand our project ten-fold and market our peppers in other towns.”
